Research Group:
Prevention, Assessment, and Intervention Research (PAIR) Lab
I lead the Prevention, Assessment, and Intervention Research (PAIR) lab. We focus primarily on research that aims to improve student outcomes within the context of a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS). I am particularly interested in these areas of research: (1) academic interventions and data-based decision making that promote equitable outcomes for children and (2) identifying and supporting contextual factors (e.g., family engagement, school and community partnerships) that improve student success. Students with interest in these topics are encouraged to join this lab to learn more, and gain research and publication experience. Below are some projects that we will be working on this academic year.

- We will be working on presentations and manuscripts related to findings from the equitable practices within an academic MTSS survey.
- Continue summarizing our review of state department of education websites for guidelines and policies around promoting equity, social justice, and culturally responsive/sustaining practices within MTSS implementation. We will develop presentations and manuscripts based on what is learned.
Family Engagement and Support
Recent accomplishments:
- Completed draft of manuscript.
- Awarded a College of Education mini grant to conduct the project below.
- In collaboration with Dr. Jennifer Wolgemuth and Dr. Lorien Jordan, our lab will engage in a participatory, critical mixed methods scoping review of Black and African American parents’ engagement in K-12 schools. We are conducting a participatory project, which means that we are inviting Black and African American parents to partner with us as co-researchers. The project will use critical theories to interrogate the experience and portrayal of Black and African American parents’ engagement. Our project is a mixed methods scoping review. Mixed methods means that we will identify and integrate qualitative and quantitative research studies. A scoping review is an approach to searching and summarizing existing research. Together, co-researchers will co-develop plans to conduct the scoping review, summarize the information we’ve learned, discuss what was learned, and share what was learned. We will develop presentations and manuscripts based on what is learned.
